Decide with your spouse or partner what, when, and how the children will be told about the separation. This might be approached in different ways depending on the ages of the children.
You will also need to discuss and agree with your ex on what parenting arrangements to put in place. The two main issues to be addressed in relation to the children are living arrangements—where and with whom the children will live—and how you will both support the children financially once you are separated.
