High conflict access and custody cases present some of the most challenging substantive issues in law as well as raising extremely difficult clinical, ethical and moral questions. Just as every family is different, the breakdown of each family is unique and requires fresh analysis.

We are grateful to participate in the dialogue in this important area. This article will first consider the most recent theory on the relational pathology of parental alienation which has widespread consensus among mental health and family law community experts.

We will then endeavor to rebut some of the legal arguments against this approach.
